In-Lab Sleep Study (Polysomnography)
An in-lab sleep study, or polysomnography (PSG), is a detailed overnight evaluation that measures how your body functions during sleep. Conducted in a quiet, comfortable environment, this study records your brain activity, breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm, and movement patterns to help identify obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, and other sleep-related conditions.
At TriCity Lung & Sleep, we provide physician-ordered in-lab testing across our accredited sleep centers in Bay City, Caro, and Bad Axe. Once your provider determines that a sleep lab study is appropriate, our team reviews your medical history and insurance coverage to coordinate the process from start to finish. We simplify scheduling, obtain prior authorizations, and ensure the study is performed and interpreted by a board-certified sleep medicine physician following AASM diagnostic standards.
What to Expect During the Study
You’ll spend one night at one of our sleep centers, which are designed for comfort and privacy. A registered technologist will apply small sensors that measure sleep stages, breathing patterns, heart rate, and oxygen. The sensors are painless and allow you to move freely throughout the night. If sleep apnea or other events occur, the data helps your physician determine severity and the most effective next steps.
Our Role in Your Care
Because polysomnography is a physician-ordered procedure, our role is to ensure the process is accurate, appropriate, and easy for every patient. We coordinate closely with referring providers and insurers to minimize delays. Our staff verifies coverage, manages pre-approvals, and ensures every study meets AASM accreditation standards for data quality, technician training, and physician interpretation.
- Comprehensive overnight monitoring in an accredited sleep lab
- Assessment of breathing, oxygen, heart rate, and brain activity
- Medical and insurance review before scheduling
- Interpretation by board-certified sleep physicians
- Results and follow-up shared promptly with your provider
If your study confirms a diagnosis such as obstructive sleep apnea, the next step may include a CPAP Titration Study to determine optimal treatment settings. For complex cases, your physician may recommend advanced titration or further testing.
